Adamas and Plaka

The two main towns on Milos are Adamas (Adamantas in Greek) and Plaka the capital.
We are staying in Adamas (photo above) which is where the main ferry terminal is. We walked to our hotel from the ferry and hired our little car from one of the many vehicle hire places nearby. Adamas is a port town and has lots of restaurants and bars and is where most boat and land excursions depart from.

Plaka looks over the entrance to the gulf where the boats come in and out to the Adamas port. It has lots of small pedestrian-only streets with shops, cafes and restaurants. This morning we went to Plaka for breakfast and some shopping, and Doug, Malcolm and Matthew climbed to the castle and church at the top of the town and got some great views.

In the afternoon we drove around and visited a few more beautiful beaches.

Milos

Milos is a volcanic island, the south-westernmost island in the Cyclades group. It has a population of about 5,000. Milos is probably best known for being the place that an armless marble statue of Aphrodite was found in 1820. That statue is now in the Louvre in Paris and is known the world over as the Venus de Milo.

Doug and Carolyn had a day sailing around the island while the rest of us hired a car and visited some of the beautiful coastline and beaches. We started at the fishing village of Klima where the fishermen's houses are carved into the rocks.

We lunched at the little fishing port of Mandrakia.

After lunch we visited Sarakíniko, clear waters and a moonlike landscape.

And later we swam at Pollonia beach before having dinner at the port.

Folegandros to Milos

We had a quiet Saturday, spending time in the pool and in the village while we waited between checkout at 11.00 a.m. and the ferry trip  to Milos at about 8.00 p.m. The hotel kindly let us use Malcolm and Raylene's ground floor room near the pool as a base which we took full advantage of.

We had lunch in one of the squares ...

...and said goodbye to Panos who had been a our waiter at a restaurant we frequented.

Then it was off to the port and a ferry trip that was fast and smooth, it was hard to believe it was the same ferry we'd travelled on just a few days earlier.

We got to Milos in time to watch the Champion's League final at a restaurant with the locals while we ate very large, delicious and cheap (9 euro) souvlaki, washed down with sangria.

Some of the local cats got a bit of a treat as we walked home!
